About Stress?
The term stress is commonly used to describe a state
in which we experience greater pressure than we believe
we can comfortably cope with—physically, mentally
or emotionally.
It may sound strange, but stress can be positive
or negative. Positive stress, gives us energy, keeps
us motivated and helps us meet the daily challenges
of life. Negative stress, is when we feel under pressure,
find it difficult to switch off mentally, feel exhausted
all the time and find it difficult to engage in life.
Stressful feelings can be mild and very short lived,
or they can feel strong and prolonged depending on
the nature of the problem/s or circumstances. As
a way of coping with how we feel, we may turn to
comfort eating, alcohol, cigarettes and non prescribed
drugs. Each of the above may provide us with momentary
relief but long term, they can further damage our
health. Prolonged stress can lead to more complex
emotional, mental, physical and behavioural difficulties,
e.g. depression, chronic anxiety, physical health
problems, addictions, self harm and ultimately contemplating
or attempting suicide
